I was always interested in engineering, even before I knew what it was. From as early as I can remember I have enjoyed studying the world around me and working with my hands to construct new and interesting projects. Whether it was when my mother noticed at age two that I used wooden blocks to build intricate structures with turrets and archways, or my current interest in building a piece of diving equipment called a rebreather, I can never remember a time in my life when I haven't been working on some new design or spending my spare time learning as much as I could about the world around me.
This love of learning and love of design has been coupled over the years with a passion for exploration. Exploration of the world around me has become the driving force behind pursuing my degree in mechanical engineering and has also led me to some of the valuable experiences I have had outside of academia. Some of these experiences include organizing and guiding a four member team to the base camp of Mt. Everest, and participating in three deepwater archaeological expeditions to the wreck site of the civil war ship the U.S.S. Monitor, for which I designed some of the equipment used.
This relationship between exploration and engineering is what I want to pursue as my career path. My ultimate goal is to work in a field that will allow me to design tools that will further the limits of knowledge about the world around us. Whether that means designing a submarine to probe the unknown reaches of the oceans, inventing new technologies to allow for safer high-altitude mountain travel or working in a team to engineer the next probe to survey mars, I see myself being able to accomplish these goals and ultimately rewrite what mankind thinks is possible.
